Have an ecologist from Three Psilos, Inc. “Top Trim” your area of approximately 1000 square feet (10 yds x 10 yds) of Scrub or Running Oak anywhere on the Lake Wales Ridge.
True oak islands, known as “hammocks,” tends to be more common, and much smaller, in areas where fires are regular. In fire suppressed areas, however, scrub oaks and running oaks can tend to dominate large areas. Regular fires restrict the height of Sand Live Oak and other oaks on The Lake Wales Ridge. Due to the regular burns, oaks would have to constantly start over from its roots, never able to reach more than six to eight feet in the ten years between burns. Trees taller than six feet will drive Florida Scrub Jays away, as it gives predatory birds a place to hunt young Scrub Jays. Three Psilos, Inc. has the solution: “Top Trimming” younger, smaller oaks.
Three Psilos, Inc. has developed a method to emulate natural fire in areas where fire is usually suppressed, such as residential areas. This keeps oaks to under eight feet, and should help attract Florida Scrub Jays. With this service, you can have our ecologist “Top” your oaks in an area up to 1000 square feet, which is a size of about 10 yards by 10 yards or thirty by thirty feet. To cover a greater area, simply add more of this Topping service. For example, to “top” a full acre of solid oaks up to 4″ in trunk diameter, just add 43 of the “Top Trim Oaks” services to cover the 43560 square feet.
Even if the goal is not to keep under eight feet, but to still restrict the height of the oaks in your area, have Three Psilos, Inc. “Top” your trees at any height you prefer, up to 12-14 feet above the ground.
A “topped” tree will allow more sunlight through the canopy, allowing a greater variety of other species, while not actually removing any oak trees!
The topped portion of the tree will be processed into a size small enough to distribute evenly on the ground, to act as a natural fertilizer. Or you can have them piled and prepared for our Microburn Service, which helps emulate natural fire even more.
